Youngsters starting at Park View School in Haringey were given the chance to take part in a two week long summer camp as part of their induction into the school. Delivered by Learn by Design for the fourth year running the structured programme proved to be another huge success.

Children from 23 different primary schools came together and made new friends over a range of activities around various themes titled Earth and Beyond and covered various topics from space, climate change, family issues and super heroes.

Split into teams the children took part in art, language, dance, drama, sport, modelling, teamwork and problem solving with each child encouraged to think and relate the activities back to Park View Academy’s learner skills targets enabling students to become:
> Independent enquirers > Team workers > Creative thinkers > Self managers > Reflective learners > Effective participators

Each group reviewed their day’s activities, recorded future ideas and updated record books that were designed and provided by Learn by Design, in order to show progress over the two weeks.

At the end the two weeks each group had the opportunity to display and present their work to family and friends demonstrating the artwork and skills developed – as well as discussing the emotional journey in preparation for secondary school.

The super hero topic proved to be a huge success with ideals of super heroes proving to be indeed the youngsters themselves as well as, the support network around them in order to establish the confidence needed throughout the transition process.

Jen Boyd, Education Communicator said:

“It was great to really get to know the youngsters and see them develop over the two weeks.  They have felt a real sense of achievement and for most it was the first time trying new activities and learning different skills. The children also demonstrated increased self-esteem, made new friends and developed a sense of belonging to their new school.”
