Young people in Leicester are ready to "find their fit" in the world of work.

Updated: Apr 1, 2022

Meet Joal, Kassie, Kai and Kelvin Batey.

The Programme:

Young people from Leicestershire are well into their Discovery phase of the Find Your Fit programme, as we visit their progress at the Venue in the centre of Leicester. The weekly course, funded by https://llep.org.uk/ llep, takes young people on a journey of self-discovery, develop their employability skills and provide a clear direction and action plan of how to achieve their chosen direction into a career.

Leading the programme, Kelvin Batey and Ellie Mallinson support and mentor the young people on a journey of self-discovery with emphasis on individual goals and aspirations that aims to identify the right career path for them. Learn by Design are incredibly impressed with the young people who have joined the programme. Each participant is full of enthusiasm and are showing the drive to succeed and we are thrilled to be a part of their journey.

Kassie said:
“I’ve been at home smoking and playing video games since leaving school and now I’m ready to “Find My Fit” in the world.”
Kai said:
“I would like to improve my confidence and communication skills”
Joal said:
“I responded to the advert on twitter as my main goal is to find a job.”

Programme Tasks:

Town Task:

Last week the team were tasked with a list of actions to go out into the community of Leicestershire and get to know their community and the employers that exist within the region. The task enhanced communication skills, raised confidence levels, and built on resilience techniques.

The team adapted their technique of approaching individuals as the day went on and feedback from the task was exceptional with Kelvin saying:

“One of the tasks was to approach a company and ask an employee how COVID had impacted their business. I was so impressed by how the team talked and interacted with interest. The task had successfully facilitated an in-depth conversation that resulted in a genuine connection with a local employer within their hometown community. I was also impressed with the resilience the team showed to continue with the tasks, even when some people on the streets were reluctant to take part. Ellie and I proud to see them push themselves out of their comfort zones."

Watch them talk about the programme and their experiences so far
