1851 Trust English Women’s Football STEM Tour

Learn by Design was challenged to quickly mobilise a high-quality team of staff that could deliver across all 8 sites in city across the UK hosting the women’s Euro’s 2020.

Challenge:

Working with the FA, the 1851 Trust was creating a new national schools’ education programme inspired by the Lionesses which brings alive, for girls and boys, the wide range of skills and roles involved in elite football.

The aims of the programme were to:

  • to challenge perception around women and girl’s football; and

  • to engage new groups of girls to try playing football. The project will take place over 3 years, launching in February 2022. In the first year the programme will be part of the major event activity linked to Women’s Euro’s tournament.

Through this programme the 1851 Trust developed a national roadshow programme for KS3 students, both male and female delivering 8 days of interactive science and sport workshops harnessing the power of the England Women’s football team. Our challenge was to quickly mobilise a high-quality team of staff that could deliver across all 8 sites in city across the UK hosting the women’s Euro’s 2020.

Solution:

Learn By Design has a sporting background, with an Olympic founder and experience delivering events and activities on behalf of the London 2012 Olympics and the Dame Kelly Homes Trust. We began working collaboratively with the 1851 trust to identify how we could use our equipment to enhance the student learning during an investigation zone of the event. Utilising our high-tech equipment including batak boards, radar speed cage, pulse oximeters and target goal, we were able to bring to life the activities outlined by the 1851 trust and provide an engaging and memorable experience for the young people taking part.

Our Learn by Design staff team are all from a STEM background and provided a fully comprehensive understanding of the how to engage young people in the principals of the science behind sport.

Legacy:

2022 has been a phenomenal year for women’s football as they went on the win Euro 2022 Final. This result has catapulted women’s football into the forefront of current media channels and supported the campaign to highlight gender equal rights and encourage more girls into the sport.

The chance to take part in the Lionesses STEM Tour has been incredible. I’ve loved challenging the perceptions that women can’t play football. We can!
