Greater Manchester Higher NCOP

Greater Manchester, wanted to support the government’s social mobility goals by rapidly increasing the number of young people from underrepresented groups who go into higher education.

Challenge:

Greater Manchester Higher is a collaborative network of higher education providers in Greater Manchester who are working together to raise the ambitions of young people and the awareness of higher education through providing impartial information, advice, and guidance (IAG), alongside a menu of outreach activities.

Greater Manchester, wanted to support the government’s social mobility goals by rapidly increasing the number of young people from underrepresented groups who go into higher education. They asked Learn by Design to help engage Y9-13 learners with a package of provision to schools in region.

Solution:

A day long industry led Destination Rail Enterprise Event held at the University of Salford, which brought Rail Industry leaders, employers, and experts together to inspire and raise aspirations in careers that exist in the Rail Industry. A carousel of activities explored the industry and skills needed to support the ever-growing market. Embedded within the day was a Rail Challenge which is supported by the Young Engineers mentor volunteers from local rail firms. The hands-on advice offered the chance for students to develop solutions to some real-world engineering challenges. A finale ended the day with judges announcing an overall winner of the Rail Challenge, with the winning school taking away a cash prize.

Legacy:

The Destination Rail programme remains a key offer to schools today. Continuing to highlight careers in rail and raise the profile of women in rail.

This was a fantastic event, and all the young people were very enthusiastic about the various projects they worked on throughout the day. It was great for the learners to have a variety of projects to work on throughout the day and working with different employers who are in the rail sector. The competition to create the railway bridge was a very popular activity, which saw the learners work together and become competitive.
