About the Workshop
After an introduction to renewable energy and innovation in transport, learners build miniature electric cars, which they then use in a competitive team challenge.
Teams fine tune their cars following the engineering design cycle of ‘design, build, test and improve’. Teams investigate the effects of powering their cars with varying quantities of electrical energy, aiming to get their car to stop closest to a target distance.
This session features as part of the longer Green Drive workshop.
Student Learning
Learner outcomes:
Understand the importance of renewable energy
Identify careers in the transport and energy industries
Apply physics and problem-solving skills to complete the engineering experiment
Curriculum Links:
Mathematics
Use the fundamentals of mathematics to solve problems.
Use standard units of mass, length, time, money and other measures, including with decimal quantities.
Round numbers and measures to an appropriate degree of accuracy.
Science:
Pay attention to objectivity and concern for accuracy, precision, repeatability and reproducibility.
Make predictions using scientific knowledge and understanding.
Make and record observations and measurements.
Energy: Fuels and energy resources.
Forces being needed to cause objects to stop or start moving, or to change their speed or direction of motion.
Design and Technology:
Test, evaluate and refine their ideas and products against a specification, taking into account the views of intended users and other interested groups.
Understand developments in design and technology, its impact on individuals, society and the environment and the responsibilities of designers, engineers and technologists.

Logistics and Planning:
Electric Cars requires a large classroom or hall space with a projector.
We ask that a teacher is always present throughout the activities, to support learner engagement and manage behaviour.
Workshops can be booked on their own and delivered on rotation throughout the day or delivered as part of a series of workshops,
where classes rotate between multiple activities.
